General Counsel

Position Summary: The General Counsel is the principal legal counsel of the Havasupai Tribe and reports directly to the Havasupai Tribal Council. The General Counsel provides professional legal counsel and representation to the Havasupai Tribal government as indicated by the Tribal Council. The General Counsel works closely and independently with the Tribal Council and the Tribal Government staff. Finally, the General Counsel assists the Tribal Council in managing the work of the Tribe’s outside legal counsel.

Tohono O’Odham Nation

POSITION SUMMARY: The attorney general provides legal advice and representation to all officials, agencies, departments, divisions and branches of the Tohono O’odham Nation, a federally recognized Indian tribe with 2.8 million acres of reservation land in Southern Arizona. The attorney general represents the Nation in all legal proceedings, and in other matters that affect the legal interests of the Nation; advises senior management and tribal officials; and supervises assistant attorneys general and contract attorneys. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Juris doctorate from an accredited law school, a licensed attorney admitted to practice before the highest court of a state of the United States, three years of supervisory experience and ten years of experience in the practice of law. If appointed, must be admitted to State Bar of Arizona within 18 months. Subject to background investigation.

INDIAN PREFERENCE
Preference in filling vacancies will be given to (1) enrolled members of the Tohono O’odham Nation, (2) enrolled members of other tribal nations or tribes, (3) other candidates.

The National Council of Urban Indian Health was founded in 1998 to represent the interests of Urban Indian Health Programs (UIHPs) before Congress and Federal agencies, and to influence policies impacting the health conditions experienced by urban American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN).The National Council of Urban Indian Health is a 501(c)(3), membership-based organization devoted to support the development of quality, accessible, and culturally sensitive health care programs for AI/AN living in urban communities. The Director of Congressional Relations will be actively engaged in the planning and preparation of NCUIH National Conferences. The Chief Judge presides over and ensures the proper operation for the Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Court. The Chief Judge is the primary judicial officer of the Tribal Court and administrator of the Nation’s Courts.

• AZ State License Attorney or eligible, in good standing required.
• Three (3) years full-time and/or equivalent judicial experience required.
• Two (2) years judicial administrative experience required.

Class Summary:
This is an advanced, /stand-alone classification encompassing incumbents responsible for providing in-house counsel and legal services to NHA leadership and the Board of Commissioners. Incumbents possess and apply a comprehensive knowledge of the legal field to actively guide and support NHA’s ongoing operations. Responsibilities may include conducting legal research and developing legal opinions; overseeing compliance activities; contracting issues, and conducting litigation including all related research and document preparation. Incumbents will actively participate in monthly Board of Commissioners Meetings. Incumbents operate with considerable latitude for unreviewed actions or decisions by virtue of their expert level knowledge and experience. Assignments generally require the interpretation and application of broad organizational policies and objectives into defined programs or services. Safety is a critical factor with NHA and all employees will adhere to Safety Policies and ensure Safety is how we perform our duties.

Required Experience:
• Valid Driver’s License
• Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited ABA law school
• Five years of legal work experience.
• Active member of the Navajo Nation Bar Association and state license in Arizona, New Mexico, or Utah required.

Preferred:
• Knowledge of HUD and NAHASDA laws, regulations, rules, procedures, and requirements
• Substantive knowledge in the following areas, preferable: Indian Housing Programs, Indian Law, Construction Law, Business or Corporate Law, Economic Development, Personal Injury, Insurance Law, Workers Compensation, Federal Environmental Law, Federal, State, and Navajo Litigation Practice, Employment or Navajo Preference in Employment, Real Estate Transactions, Landlord or Tenant Law, and/or Mortgages or Financial Transactions.

Job Description
POSITION: Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS) has an opening for a staff attorney to work out of its Traverse City, Michigan office.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MILS, is a statewide provider of free legal services to low income Native Americans and tribes. MILS represents individuals, families, tribes and organizations in cases that span a range of tribal and federal Indian law cases. This position will focus on tribal and state law legal issues; with an emphasis on tribal court child welfare and criminal defense matters. This position will require overnight travel in the Upper Peninsula.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal applicants will be licensed to practice law in Michigan or eligible to be admitted by waiver and have three plus years relevant litigation experience. Applicants must possess both written and oral advocacy skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of American Indians.

BENEFITS: This is a full time position with a salary from $43,000 to $58,000 depending on experience. MILS offers a generous health benefit and vacation/sick leave package.
