Job Title:  Assistant Prosecutor
Pay Range: $67,028 – $80,433.50 per annum
Reports to: Prosecutor
Supervises: Not a Supervisory position.

Summary: Under general direction of the Prosecutor, prosecutes cases on behalf of the Ak-Chin Indian Community. This is as an exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equivalent to two years of full time work providing legal counsel in a tribal, local government, or corporate setting, at least one year of trial work is preferred. Federal Indian Law course work or clinical experience in an Indian legal clinic or law school setting will be considered toward the required experience.  Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Arizona and possess a Juris Doctorate.  Must posses a valid Arizona Driver’s License and be able to meet the Communitys insurance carrier requirements. (see list attached to application or on the website).

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Interim Executive Director has overall responsibility for the leadership and operation of DNA, including general administration of the program; working with Senior Management in Litigation, Administration, Finance, Development, IT, and Facility Maintenance; personnel management; implementing programmatic policies; providing necessary litigation support; and working with the Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be admitted to practice law in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah or the Navajo Nation or must be eligible for admission by reciprocity in one of these jurisdictions; must have a B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited university; a business degree and a J.D. degree are preferred; must have a minimum of seven (7) years progressive management and supervisory experience (including supervision of lawyers and legal professionals), excellent communication skills, excellent skills and supervisory experience in budgeting, financial management and raising funds. Previous experience at a legal aid office is preferable with demonstration of the following: direct work with a board of directors, breadth of organizational experience, honored administrative skill set and time tested wisdom, demonstration of the ability to be unafraid to address hard issues head on and make tough decisions, and strong recommendations.

Job Opportunities – Part Time Attorney Positions

The Tohono O’odham Advocate Program (TOAP) of the Tohono O’odham Nation, a Legal Aid and Criminal Defense office in Sells, Arizona 60 miles west of Tucson. The Advocate Program represents enrolled tribal members in Tribal Court in Criminal, Domestic Relations, Juvenile Offender, and Estate Planning cases.

The Tohono O’odham Nation, located on the border in southern Arizona, is the second-largest reservation in the U.S. Jurisdictional issues between federal, state and tribal laws, including tradition and culture, present unique opportunities in court.

The Advocate Program has been in existence for over 30 years. Its primary mission is to provide high quality representation to tribal members. The Advocate Program is a service delivery program which means direct contact with clients, representation in courts of the Tohono O’odham Nation and other venues, and advice and counsel to members.

3 part time Attorney positions available. Each position is for a minimum of 20-25 hours per week. Each job also includes generous health benefits, with sick and annual leave accruals.

Must be a member in good standing of a state bar or equivalent. Must apply to practice in the Tohono O’odham Judicial Court upon hire. Prior experience in the field of criminal law and working with Native American communities is strongly preferred. The practice is challenging and interesting.

Ft. Defiance has a vacant Staff Attorney/Project Administrator (no supervision) position under the NARF grant.  The NARF Criminal Grant ends September 30, 2017, due to the length of time left on the grant (5mos), this person will only be responsible for Quarterly Reporting. This person will be 80% Staff Attorney and 20% Project Administrator with additional pay.  The work site is at Fort Defiance DNA Office; requires full time in Fort Defiance, under the direct supervision of the Fort Defiance MA.

DNA-People’s Legal Services has several litigator positions open in our Navajo offices in Arizona and New Mexico, and in our Flagstaff AZ and Farmington NM off reservation offices. In most cases, litigators licensed in other state jurisdictions can waive into NM or AZ; litigators in Navajo offices Staff Attorney’s provide direct legal services to low-income individuals on a wide range of civil matters, including consumer law, family law, domestic violence, housing, public benefits, employment, education, health, disability, and elder law. Staff Attorneys represent clients in tribal, state, and federal courts, as well as administrative agencies. Staff Attorneys work closely with DNA’s tribal court advocates (tribal members who are licensed to practice in tribal courts) and regularly participate in outreach and community education projects. This is a fast-paced and dynamic position, appropriate for applicants who are committed to the ideals of legal services, able to live in a remote area, and willing to travel extensively throughout the Navajo Reservation.

Qualifications: Attorney must be LICENSED to practice law in respective state; experience with issues of clients communities served.

Salary/Benefits: The minimum starting attorney salary is $37,500.  Persons with prior practice experience will start at a higher salary which will vary depending on the nature and duration of such experience. DNA provides health, dental and vision insurance at a minimal cost to employees, and provides paid bar leave, student loan deferral/forgiveness, life insurance coverage, and the option to open a 401(k).

Governor Doug Ducey announced (on April 4th) he has begun accepting applications for a vacant judicial position on the Mohave County Superior Court. The vacancy was created by the retirement of Judge Steven F. Conn.

The Assistant Public Defender will review applications and screen new cases to determine a plan of action. Shall appear and represent in the Tribe’s adult court as needed or assigned by the Chief Public Defender. The Assistant Public Defender shall provide all necessary legal services in the representation of criminals and juveniles at all pre-, present, and post-trial proceedings. Representation of juveniles will include matters of delinquencies, family in need and Guardian Ad Litem matters, but only in the interest of said child. Perform investigative inquiries as necessary to represent a client. Shall perform legal research and follow up on matters as assigned by the Public Defender. Shall prepare or assist in drafting and filing motions, memorandums of law, petitions and other legal documents. Recognize sensitive and complex issues relating to court cases and handle efficiently. Will be responsible in assisting with data collection and reporting to the Public Defender as assigned. Shall perform other related duties as assigned.
