Job Opportunities – Part Time Attorney Positions

The Tohono O’odham Advocate Program (TOAP) of the Tohono O’odham Nation, a Legal Aid and Criminal Defense office in Sells, Arizona 60 miles west of Tucson. The Advocate Program represents enrolled tribal members in Tribal Court in Criminal, Domestic Relations, Juvenile Offender, and Estate Planning cases.

The Tohono O’odham Nation, located on the border in southern Arizona, is the second-largest reservation in the U.S. Jurisdictional issues between federal, state and tribal laws, including tradition and culture, present unique opportunities in court.

The Advocate Program has been in existence for over 30 years. Its primary mission is to provide high quality representation to tribal members. The Advocate Program is a service delivery program which means direct contact with clients, representation in courts of the Tohono O’odham Nation and other venues, and advice and counsel to members.

3 part time Attorney positions available. Each position is for a minimum of 20-25 hours per week. Each job also includes generous health benefits, with sick and annual leave accruals.

Must be a member in good standing of a state bar or equivalent. Must apply to practice in the Tohono O’odham Judicial Court upon hire. Prior experience in the field of criminal law and working with Native American communities is strongly preferred. The practice is challenging and interesting.
