The Hopi Tribe is seeking a qualified person to serve as a Pro Tem Judge of the Hopi Tribal Court located in Keams Canyon, Arizona on the Hopi Indian Reservation. The Hopi Tribal Court is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Winslow, Arizona. The Hopi Tribe exercises jurisdiction over a broad range of civil and criminal matters. A Pro Tem Judge(s) will be appointed to hear cases as assigned by the Chief Judge in instances where the Hopi Trial Court judges have conflicts of interest and in other cases where needed. This is a part-time, as needed appointment and will be paid at a daily stipend rate.

DUTIES:

  • Provide employee relations and labor relations advisory services based on knowledge of Federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform case and situation analysis of problems and apply knowledge and skills to solve diverse disciplinary issues, and provide accurate direction and instruction for procedural requirements on adverse and disciplinary actions.
  • Develop and maintain a sound working relationship with other Federal agencies, especially the Department of Labor (DOL), the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and the Office of Regional Counsel (ORC) to ensure a viable program.

  • Perform duties associated with Labor Management Relations, including representing the Area Office in meetings and discussions with formal and informal employee groups determining the appropriateness of recognition required by employee organizations under Executive Order 11491; Serve as an advisor to management’s negotiating committee for general agreements and handle grievance cases in accordance with negotiated agreements as appropriate.

DiandraBenallyDiandra Benally (JD ’05) was determined to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer so she could help her fellow Native Americans. The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University made that dream a reality. “If it were not for ASU Law, I don’t think I would have advanced in my career as I have,” she said. Recently, Benally was named general counsel for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation – the first woman ever appointed to that position. Benally started her career as a staff attorney with the Navajo Nation Department of Justice. She then saw an opportunity to move closer to the Phoenix area and took the job of assistant general counsel for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Job Opportunity – Tribal Prosecutor

Nez Perce Tribe seeks Tribal Prosecutor to:

  • Represent the Tribe in all criminal and juvenile cases before Nez Perce Tribal Court, reviewing reports and charging cases, drafting written complaints, motions, proposed orders, legal briefs, jury instructions, sentencing recommendations, and other legal documents.
  • Work closely with the Tribal Police Department, Conservation Enforcement, Social Services, Probation, Domestic Violence Programs, and other tribal agencies in filing and prosecuting their cases in Tribal Court.
  • Supervise an office assistant, deputy prosecutor, and Child Support Enforcement attorney.

Requires at least two years (five preferred) of successful experience as a prosecutor or criminal defense attorney, preferably in a tribal government setting. Please provide a legal writing sample with application, and resume listing at least three work-related references. Must include a completed NPT application (available on www.nezperce.org). Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured under the Tribe’s policy; applicants who are not Idaho residents must provide their own Motor Vehicle Report.
