Since the 1988 creation of the Indian Legal Program at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, more than 300 students representing more than 95 tribes throughout the country have earned law degrees and gone on to serve their communities, governments and to work in the private sector. The Hon. William C. Canby Jr., a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was the first of many distinguished ILP faculty members that today includes seven professors and numerous faculty associates. For more than 25 years, the ILP has facilitated an unrivaled awareness and understanding of federal Indian law through curriculum, student engagement, public education programs and symposiums.

Congratulations to Mary Modrich-Alvarado (Class of 2008) who has been selected as an American Bar Association (ABA) Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Scholar.  Mary is a tribal attorney in the Tax & Finance Unit at the Navajo Nation Department of Justice in Window Rock, Arizona.  She advises and works with the Navajo Nation’s departments, programs, and committees on legal issues focusing on tax, finance, and litigation.

The Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Court is in need of a State Bar Attorney to preside over conflict cases (normally a case involving Tripreside over conflict cases (normally a case involving Tribal Council, a Tribal Council member or a civil/criminal case). Position Title:  Dean

 

Responsibilities:

The dean is the academic leader and chief executive officer of the College and is responsible for furthering the role of the College in the Strategic Plan of the University Idaho. The dean is responsible for fostering distinguished records of scholarship, teaching, and service in the College’s two locations and in University-wide programs in which the College participates; providing sound administrative leadership; engaging with the Idaho State Bar on matters relevant to the law and legal education within the state; maintaining relationships with the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of the state, the American Bar Association, and the Association of American Law Schools; promoting and sustaining relationships between the College and the University community and its stakeholders; facilitating faculty governance; overseeing the allocation and use of resources and facilities assigned to the College; and raising funds for the advancement of College programs and resources. The dean reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President of the University. The appointment will be full-time, twelve month, and is expected to begin no later than July 1, 2014.

The successful candidate for dean will be eligible for consideration for tenure under college bylaws and the university Faculty Staff Handbook.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to fulfill the responsibilities of academic leader and chief executive officer of the College and meet the following qualifications:

Colorado State University

Position Title, Faculty Ethnic Studies Department

 

The Ethnic Studies Department at Colorado State University invites applications for one 9-month tenure track position in either African American or Native American Studies. This is an Assistant Professor position and salary is commensurate with qualifications. The final result of this search will be only one hire.

Starting date is August 16, 2014.

 

Qualifications and Responsibilities:  Qualified applicants will have completed a doctorate degree by August 15, 2014. 

 

            Required qualifications: The applicant must demonstrate potential excellence in research/scholarship in African American or Native American Studies; potential for excellence in teaching (African American or Native American courses), potential for excellence in service/outreach, and strong communication skills. Service and outreach commitment to the African American or Native American community should be established through past or current examples of mentoring, activism, and outreach.

 

Examples of potential candidates’ areas of expertise in African American Studies include but are not limited to: sociocultural politics, history, social movements, education, cinema, critical race theory and its engagement with criminal justice, gender and black feminist theory, African American arts and cultural expressions, sports, and diaspora studies. 

 

Examples of potential candidates’ areas of expertise in Native American Studies include but are not limited to: Indigenous knowledge systems, contemporary literary and visual culture, history, health, Indigenous education and leadership, tribal governments, sociopolitical and political economy.

 

            Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who can teach core ethnic studies courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level (i.e. introduction to ethnic studies, ethnic studies theory & history, etc).  Candidates whose work is interdisciplinary, intersectional, and/or comparative are also strongly encouraged to apply. We particularly encourage applications from scholars with a doctorate in African American or Native American Studies, or Ethnic Studies with an emphasis in African American or Native American Studies; however, we also welcome and encourage applicants with degrees in other disciplines. 

 

            Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year, including graduate and undergraduate courses, mentor students, have an active research agenda, and engage in outreach/service with the  African American or Native American community.

The faculty members come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds that encompass both the humanities and the social sciences. Our faculty and researchers are committed to interdisciplinary, indigenous, international, and comparative approaches that challenge systemic marginalization of diverse populations.

The University of Idaho College of Law

Position Title:  Director, Law Admissions

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Administration & Students, the Director exercises independent judgment to develop and direct the law school’s admissions program, including the development and implementation of a coherent, unified marketing strategy to maximize the breadth and quality of the applicant pool; development and oversight of admission office procedures and polices and supervision of admissions staff; counsel prospective applicants; participate, as a voting member, with the faculty admissions committee in the applicant evaluation and decision making process; plan special recruitment events on and off-campus for prospective and admitted applicants; and working with faculty and committees as needed. The Director also administers the College’s scholarship program, in cooperation with the University Financial Aid Office, including the selection of scholarship award recipients and counseling students on availability of scholarships and general financial aid matters. The Director cultivates long term relationships with strategic undergraduate institutions, pre-law advisors, faculty, and alumni to ensure that the goals of the admissions program are achieved. The Director serves as the primary and sole leader of law school admissions processes and objectives, including being responsible for meeting enrollment and budgetary goals. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Aid and Scholarship Award, duties include:     15%  Essential

Develop scholarship award and allocation strategy to maximize enrollment targets; counsel current students about visiting other programs, financial aid, short term loans and other needs; maintain and oversee scholarship and financial aid information; develop and maintain comparative data on financial aid and scholarship awards.

Oversight of Data Management duties include:                10%  Essential

Develop procedures and processes to ensure accurate collection and entry of student application data and records; oversee staff consistently and accurately maintain files of the applicant and admitted student pools, and serve as custodian of admission documents and records; design and prepare statistical and narrative reports for various constituencies, including external agencies, University officials, law school administration, and the faculty; oversee and evaluate the use of appropriate computer applications to effectively manage the admissions program; use information reports from data gathered above to develop annual strategic admissions plans in conjunction with the deans.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and/or an equivalent combination of undergraduate coursework and qualifying work experience in marketing, business or public relations. A Juris Doctor degree or equivalent years of higher education experience in admissions is required.

Experience in marketing, admissions, and/or financial aid; preparing complex reports and knowledge of statistical analysis; communicating effectively in public forums; functioning in a tearn environment; preparing informative written communications; organizing multiple projects in a fast paced office setting; utilizing technology in relation to these functions.

Energetic, engaging personality, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Ability to supervise and manage staff and students involved with the admissions, recruitment and enrollment management process.

The Criminal Law Reform Project of the ACLU’s National Office in New York City seeks legal interns for the Summer of 2014

 

 

 

OVERVIEW:

 

 

 

The Criminal Law Reform Project seeks an end to excessively harsh crime policies that result in mass incarceration and stand in the way of a just and equal society. The Project focuses its work at the “front end” of the criminal justice system. The Project begins its work from an individual’s first contact with law enforcement through to the sentencing phase. CLRP places an emphasis on ending drug prohibition, which has failed to achieve public safety while putting unprecedented numbers of people behind bars and eroding constitutional rights. The Project fulfills its mission by litigating and conducting strategic and precedent-setting advocacy that promotes reform of the criminal justice system and drug laws in particular, reduces the number of people entering the system, and protects the constitutional rights of those in the system.

 

 

 

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

 

 

 

Our Summer 2014 legal internship requires a 10-12 week commitment, and is full-time.   Interns are highly encouraged to obtain funding from outside sources. Arrangements can be made for work/study or course credit.

 

 

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

 

Legal interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the CLRP team.  Interns will gain experience by:

 

 

 

·         Conducting legal and policy research.

 

·         Drafting memoranda, affidavits and briefs.

 

  • Researching prospects for new litigation, including both factual and legal claims.
  • Participating in discovery and motion practice.
  • Working alongside attorneys in the preparation of expert and percipient witnesses for courtroom testimony.
  • Working on the Project’s non-litigation advocacy issues.
  • Other projects as assigned.

 

 

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

The Washington Legislative Office (WLO) of the ACLU seeks applicants for legal interns for the Summer of 2014 in Washington, D.C.

 

 

 

OVERVIEW

 

 

 

Founded in 1952, the Washington National Office is responsible for advancing the civil liberties agenda of the national organization before Congress and the Executive Branch, as well as working with ACLU affiliates on state legislatures.

 

 

 

The Summer Legal Internship requires a 10-12 week commitment and is full-time. Students are highly encouraged to seek Public Interest Fellowship funds for the internship.  Arrangements can be made for work/study or course credit.

 

 

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

 

Legal interns will have the opportunity to work on a variety of issues.  Working closely with the Lobbyists, whose area of focus matches a specific civil liberties issue area, interns will gain exposure to all aspects of litigation and legislative/policy work including:

 

 

 

  • ·         Researching civil liberties implications of legislative proposals and track related legislation.
  • ·         Working with attorneys to draft testimony for Congressional hearings.
  • ·         Attending hearings and preparing written reports.
  • ·         Attending coalition meetings as necessary with the lead lobbyist.
  • ·         Researching and drafting issue statements for posting on the ACLU’s web site, in newsletters and action alerts.
  • ·         Other projects as assigned.

 

 

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

 

The internship is open to all second and third year law students who have completed coursework in constitutional law and possess:

 

  • ·         Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills.
  • ·         The ability to work independently, a high degree of motivation and the initiative to see projects through to completion.
  • ·         An understanding of constitutional law & legal research.
  • ·         A commitment to civil liberties and a demonstrated interest in a specific area of legislation.

The Indian Legal Program at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law has created three awards to be given annually to recognize the ILP’s distinguished alumni.  The inaugural awards will be presented at the ILP 25th Anniversary Dinner on November 22, 2013.  Awards will be given in the following categories: the Indian Legal Program Professional Achievement Award, the Indian Legal Program Alumni Service Award, and the Indian Legal Program Emerging Leader Award.

Indian Legal Program Professional Achievement Award

The Indian Legal Program Professional Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement in Indian Law or Tribal Law throughout an individual’s career.  The award honors ILP alumni whose achievements in the field of Indian Law or Tribal Law have brought distinction to themselves and real benefit to the Indian community.

Nomination Package Requirements

  • Describe the unique professional achievements in the field of Indian Law or Tribal Law that has brought distinction to the candidate.  (maximum two pages)
  • Describe the recognized contributions made by this candidate that demonstrate a benefit to the larger community? (maximum one page)
  • Describe the ways in which the candidate’s achievements are truly extraordinary or exceptional.  (maximum one page)
  • Provide at least two letters of support from individuals that can speak to the candidate’s impact on his or her profession.
  • Letters of support should speak to the magnitude of the individual’s impact in the practice of Indian or tribal law or in the Indian community.
  • Provide a 200 word bio of the nominee.

Indian Legal Program Alumni Service Award

The ILP Alumni Service Award is given for outstanding service to the Indian Legal Program, and is awarded for extended, extraordinary service to the Indian Legal Program.

Nomination Package Requirements

  • Describe the ways in which the candidate has served or supported the ILP and the ILP alumni.  Examples can include serving on committees, boards, CLEs, mentoring ILP students, or other volunteer or fundraising efforts or funding commitments.  (maximum one page)
  • Describe the ways this service been truly extraordinary.  (maximum one page)
  • Describe how the candidate’s service has benefited the ILP.  (maximum one page)
  • Please provide at least two letters of support from ILP alumni as part of the nomination package.
  • Provide a 200 word bio of the nominee.

Indian Legal Program Emerging Leader Award

The ILP Emerging Leader Award acknowledges and encourages service to the ILP by alumni who are less than ten years out of law school.  The award recognizes outstanding achievements in promoting or supporting the ILP through volunteer support of ILP and/or ASU NALSA.  Such activities could include support of the ASU NALSA Golf Tournament, mentoring, fundraising, volunteering for ASU NALSA moot court, volunteering at ILP events, and student recruitment.

Nomination Package Requirements

  • Describe how the candidate achieved an exceptional level of service while balancing the demands of being a recent graduate. (maximum one page)
  • Describe how the candidate was proactive in efforts to become involved in ILP and/or ILP alumni activities.  (maximum one page)
  • Describe how the candidate’s service has been sustained over a long period of time or how the service has been innovative or beneficial.  (maximum one page)
  • Provide two letters of support from fellow ILP alumni.
