Under the administrative supervision from the Court Administrator, provides legal review and advice to Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Court. Through legal expertise with the Indian law and general principles of the law, provides research for the Court Judges, working to assist the Judges in resolving legal issues as they arise. Ensures that Community’s Constitution and applicable laws are followed, and that due process principles are applied to ensure the fair and reasonable administration of justice of the matters pending before the Court. Assists with the professional development of Court Staff and Judges by organizing training activities and collecting and distributing information on federal Indian Law and tribal law developments and best practices in tribal justice systems. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt and may be required to work evenings, weekends, and non-standard work schedule. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:  A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school, with a minimum of seven years attorney experience, with three of the seven years practicing before or working in a tribal, state or federal court setting.   
    1. Demonstrated experience in federal Indian law is required.  
    2. Preference given to candidates with prior judicial experience, either as Judge or Judicial Clerk, in a legal capacity. 
    3. Must attend a minimum of 15 hours annual continuing legal education as related to job and approved by supervisor.  
  • Equivalency – Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications. 
  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Washburn University School of Law invites applications for a full-time visiting faculty position teaching Legal Writing beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. This is a 9-month visiting position, although the position has a possibility of renewal contingent on the need for services and the availability of funding. In addition, Washburn may have a tenure-track legal writing appointment available after the 2022-2023 academic year depending on budget and curricular needs. Job Description:
OTJ is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Attorney Advisor to provide counsel and assistance to the Director and Deputy Director. OTJ attorneys:
-Provide advice on significant tribal justice matters and assist in policy and legislative development and review.
-Provide advice to OTJ leadership on Department components litigating, protecting or otherwise addressing Native American rights and/or related issues.
-Review proposed legal actions submitted by divisions that require OTJ approval or coordination.
-Perform legal research on assigned questions or law or policy and prepare reports and memoranda.
-Assist in coordinating with attorneys and officials of the Department, other government agencies, and interested parties to provide guidance and advice to ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory and policy requirements.
-Assist in maintaining liaison with federally recognized tribes, and work with the appropriate federal, tribal, state, and local officials, professional associations, and public interest groups.
-Develop, coordinate and execute special projects as assigned by the Director or the Deputy Director.

Qualifications:

Experience with Federal Indian Law is required. Prosecution and/or litigation experience is strongly preferred but not required. Job Opportunity – Tribal Prosecutor

General Definition: Provide prosecutor service for the Zuni Tribe in all classes of criminal offenses. Investigate and prosecute criminal matters and related legal issues of crimes that occurred within the exterior boundary of the Zuni reservation.

Duties:

  • Performs all phases of prosecution over a wide range of criminal matter related issues.
  • Present and prosecute all criminal complaints in Tribal Court.
  • Ensure that police execute Court orders, documents, services of process and other legal requirements.
  • Supervise the gathering of evidence by Tribal law enforcement officers to ensure that each case is promptly and fairly presented.
  • Initiate and/or assist in training tribal police officers in criminal and court procedures.
  • Provide legal services for the Police Department, to assist Social Services and other tribal departments in filing through tribal court and other legal processes.
  • Develop protocol for compiling chain of custody of evidence and legal review of cases.
  • Develop legal strategy for prosecutorial process.
  • Represent the interests of the Pueblo of Zuni in prosecuting individuals charged with violating Zuni Codes.
  • Abide by the ethical code of conduct.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of Tribal and Federal court systems and of state, federal and Tribal statutes, rules, regulations, and codes. Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of legal research. Knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence. Knowledge of court processes, administrative law processes, and legal terminology. Knowledge of legal strategies, their development and presentation. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in records analysis. Skill in operating a personal computer, in use of software application, and in conducting internet searches. Skill in establishing, maintaining, and improving cooperative working relationships. Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement training. Ability to write reports and to complete forms that may be required. Ability to understand and be sensitive to Zuni culture and tradition. Must be of high moral character and integrity. Ability to follow instructions. Ability to maintain good working relationships with tribal employees, tribal court, law enforcement, and the general public.

Training and Experience:  Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school with one (1) year experience handling criminal cases. OR  A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related major with two (2) years experience in victim assistance, law enforcement, and/or court processes preferred.
