Duties:
As the Administrator Advisor, you will:

  • Prepare policy letters and position papers for the Administrator and review all policy guidance for consistency with regulations, statues; and coordinate all policies for consistency.
  • Be responsible for planning and conducting outreach to the public and client groups.
  • Plan, coordinate and assemble periodic reports on the Business Operating Plan (BOP).
  • Utilize available computer equipment and data systems to maintain current grantee data, track performance trends, compliance issues and generate appropriate work products.
  • Provide oversight to local functions such as managing travel, staff and equipment resources, and training.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Classification Responsibilities: A City Magistrate is responsible for presiding over misdemeanor and civil traffic cases filed with the Mesa Municipal Court, and presides over Orders of Protection. A City Magistrate is responsible for applying relevant Supreme Court Rules, state statutes, City ordinances, and case law when presiding over trials to the court, trials to a jury, pre-trial conferences, arraignments, motions, and other hearings. An employee in this class is also responsible for imposing sentences commensurate to the offense and within the parameters allowed by law. In addition, may be required to conduct initial appearances or arraignments in a jail court environment in accordance with the Arizona Rules of Criminal Procedure. This class performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features: A City Magistrate is appointed by the City Council to a specified term. Prior to consideration for reappointment by the City Council, City Magistrates are evaluated by a Judicial Advisory Board, which makes recommendations to the City Council. This class is FLSA exempt- professional.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to 7 – 9 years of experience as a lawyer, judge, or hearing officer in criminal or traffic cases, and graduation from an accredited school of law.

Special Requirements. Admission to the Arizona State Bar Association. For this position, an individual receiving a conditional offer of employment from the City of Mesa must pass a background investigation through the City of Mesa Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to commencing employment with the City of Mesa.

Salary: $143,000 / Year

Duties and Responsibilities
As an Assistant Public Defender under the supervision of the Public Defender, the Assistant Public Defender shall represent without charge, criminal defendants, juvenile offenders, and parents and custodians in child welfare cases when appointed by the Tribal Court judges. The Assistant Public Defender will review applications and screen new cases to determine a plan of action. Shall appear and represent in the Tribe’s adult court as needed or assigned by the Chief Public Defender. The Assistant Public Defender shall provide all necessary legal services in the representation of criminals and juveniles at all pre-, present, and post-trial proceedings. Representation of juveniles will include matters of delinquencies, family in need and Guardian Ad Litem matters, but only in the interest of said child. Perform investigative inquiries as necessary to represent a client. Shall perform legal research and follow up on matters as assigned by the Public Defender. Shall prepare or assist in drafting and filing motions, memorandums of law, petitions and other legal documents. Recognize sensitive and complex issues relating to court cases and handle efficiently. Will be responsible in assisting with data collection and reporting to the Public Defender as assigned. Shall perform other related duties as assigned.

Successful completion of a course of study in an accredited two (2) year college leading to an AA/AAS degree in Criminal Justice or closely related field. NOTE: Applicant must submit a copy of all college transcripts and/or degree to meet positive education requirements.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, candidates must have had two (2) years of specialized experience.

Specialized experience is experience in defending cases involving criminal law, Guardian Ad litem, child welfare and juvenile delinquency successfully OR a combination of education and training in a job related field.
