Diandra Benally (JD ’05) was determined to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer so she could help her fellow Native Americans. The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University made that dream a reality. “If it were not for ASU Law, I don’t think I would have advanced in my career as I have,” she said. Recently, Benally was named general counsel for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation – the first woman ever appointed to that position. Benally started her career as a staff attorney with the Navajo Nation Department of Justice. She then saw an opportunity to move closer to the Phoenix area and took the job of assistant general counsel for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.
