Deputy Defense Attorney (2 positions)
Job Description

Under general supervision of the Managing Defense Attorney, represents Community members facing a variety of criminal, juvenile, and traffic charges before the Tribal Court. This position is treated as an FLSA exempt position.1. Interviews clients and witnesses and performs legal research work to obtain information necessary to prepare an appropriate defense for assigned clients before the Tribal Court.2. Files motions and meets with the Community Prosecutor on pending cases.3 Prepares briefs, case files, and various other records to support the defense of the client and document case status/progress.4. Represents clients both adult and juvenile in criminal proceedings such as Bench Trials, Jury Trials and Adjudications.5. Performs other job-related duties that enhance and facilitate departmental operations.
Skills/Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college of law with a Juris Doctor degree and 2-3 years of Tribal Advocacy work experience, highly desirable. If not a member of the Arizona State Bar, must be willing to take and pass the Arizona State Bar within one year of employment with the community. Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position. Special Qualifications: Applicant must pass a pre-employment drug test, have no felony conviction, and have had NO misdemeanor convictions within the last year.
