Federal recognition allows for self-government and other permits that\nare restricted from federally unrecognized tribes.<br>\n<br>\nFerguson-Bohnee is featured in an MSNBC video that discusses the need for\ntribal recognition, which Pointe-au-Chien has been pursuing for over 20 years.\nWatch the full video <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=http-3A__click.e.asu.edu_-3Fqs-3Ddf49696a1d596f1e8f274a77a993821e9015dca9892fee624a9b8a7f66abb4d502af0ef9cb6a64d524522584f07a4df60409de5473901f6f&amp;d=DwMDaQ&amp;c=l45AxH-kUV29SRQusp9vYR0n1GycN4_2jInuKy6zbqQ&amp;r=Tv2et-p2VZgs3ft6TpUeCjMA4XODUpLY2hiuy272HwY&amp;m=W8CWQ-Uliw9OVWBj8gSowuYmxdNFXPJY2p-wa21B7wA&amp;s=SJX9iJnMU9KBnUw-RcPiobS8-9BkGHoKl8Ja383UpX4&amp;e=\">here<\/a>.<br>\n<br>\nIn <em>The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma: Resilience through Adversity<\/em>, <strong>Professor\nRobert Miller <\/strong>(Eastern Shawnee) wrote the chapter, \u201cTribal, Federal, and\nState Laws Impacting the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, 1812 to 1945,\u201d in which he\ndiscussed the legal and constitutional history of his tribe.&nbsp;<br>\n<br>\nDespite the distinct laws that separated the Eastern Shawnee Tribe into at\nleast five separate nations in the 18th century, the Mixed Band of Senecas and\nShawnees \u201coperated under established governmental leaders, laws, governing\nmechanisms and traditional practices\u201d in the early 19th century.&nbsp;<br>\n<br>\nWhile going through the history when the U.S. government began to take over,\nMiller notes every important legal development and act made by the tribal\ngovernments and the federal government that has been recorded.<br>\n<br>\n\u201cThe Eastern Shawnee Tribe has governed itself and its people since time\nimmemorial,\u201d Miller said in his chapter. \u201cThe Eastern Shawnee people are\ncitizens of three political entities: the United States, the states in which\nthey are domiciled and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe. The Eastern Shawnee nation\ncontinues today to exercise its inherent sovereign powers and to govern its\nterritory, its citizens and all who enter its jurisdiction.\u201d<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Professor Trevor Reed<\/strong> (Hopi) has conducted extensive research about his tribe&#8217;s\nstruggle to reclaim culture from museums, archives, universities, government\ninstitutions, and more.<br>\nIn his upcoming publication <em>Reclaiming Ownership of\nthe Indigenous Voice: The Hopi Music Repatriation Project <\/em>in the Oxford\nHandbook of Musical Repatriation, Reed discusses his efforts to\nreclaim&nbsp;Hopi ceremonial song recordings and their associated intellectual\nproperty rights back to the Hopi Tribe.<br><br>\nIn his repatriation work, he poses the following\nquestions:&nbsp;&#8220;is repatriation best conceived through an appeal to\nproperty principles, or are there other principles of ownership and circulation\non which repatriation might be more effectively based?
