Assistant General Counsel (Government)<\/p>\n

Closes 04\/13\/13
\nSalary $106,539 – $157,148 annually<\/p>\n

Definition:<\/span><\/strong>
\nUnder general supervision of the Deputy General Counsel, provides legal review
\nand advice to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC or
\nCommunity) government.\u00a0 Ensures that applicable laws are followed so that
\ntribal sovereignty is protected and enhanced.\u00a0 Provides assistance to
\navoid or prevent expensive legal disputes and litigation and protects the
\nCommunity\u2019s legal interests.\u00a0 This job class is treated as FLSA exempt.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tasks: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Reviews legal documents as directed by supervisor, may
    \nbe assigned as counsel for civil litigation involving the Community and its
    \ndepartments.\u00a0\u00a0Advises supervisor and\/or Community Council on legal
    \nmatters affecting SRPMIC.\u00a0 Reviews law, rules, regulations, contracts,
    \nintergovernmental agreements, grant documents and related legal documents as
    \ndirected.<\/li>\n
  2. Provides legal guidance on personnel, program and other related issues to various administrative departments of the SRPMIC.\u00a0 Drafts legal documents and
    \nassists in drafting ordinances, regulations, and policies.\u00a0 May provide
    \nfunctional, project specific supervision to support staff.<\/li>\n
  3. Works with a broad range of clients such as Council members, government employees, boards, and committees and other officials many of whom are Community members.<\/li>\n
  4. Represents SRPMIC on committee meetings, conferences, consultations or other external or intergovernmental meetings related to the various interests of the Community, as directed.<\/li>\n
  5. Conducts legal research and provides written legal advice related to Community interests in areas related to tribal sovereignty, tribal jurisdiction, taxation,
    \nmembership, health and human resources, law enforcement, human
    \nresources\/personnel matters, civil litigation, estate planning, business law
    \nand\/or other areas as directed by supervisor.<\/li>\n
  6. Assists in the preparation of legal and technical correspondence for the President,
    \nVice President, Community Manager, and General Counsel as directed
    \nsupervisor.<\/li>\n
  7. Keeps abreast of federal law, regulations, administrative and court decision
    \naffecting Indian law and interacts with the BIA, OST, and other federal, state
    \nor local agencies impacting the Community.<\/li>\n
  8. May supervise non-attorneys, law clerks, interns, and\/or externs, as
    \nassigned.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Qualifications:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Education and Experience:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Graduation
    \nfrom an American Bar Associated accredited college or university with a Law
    \nDegree (Juris Doctor) and at least three (3) years of experience as a licensed
    \nattorney representing Native American tribes in legal affairs.\u00a0 Experience
    \nthat has provided knowledge of social, political, and legal status conditions
    \nof tribal governments is essential.<\/p>\n

    Equivalency:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Any equivalent
    \ncombination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to
    \nsatisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling
    \nthis position.<\/p>\n

    Special Requirements:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Must be a
    \nmember in good standing with a state bar association or if currently not a
    \nmember of the Arizona Bar must take and pass the Arizona Bar Exam and be
    \nadmitted to the Arizona Bar within one (1) year from the date of hire.\u00a0 In
    \naddition, candidates must have the ability to practice in Federal District
    \nCourt if required.\u00a0 Must attend a minimum of 15 hours annual continuing
    \nlegal education as related to job and approved by supervisor.<\/p>\n
