In November the American Library <a title=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/aboutala\/offices\/oitp\/index.cfm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/aboutala\/offices\/oitp\/index.cfm\">Association\u2019s Office of Information Technology Policy<\/a> hosted a thoroughly stimulating conference on <a title=\"http:\/\/wo.ala.org\/tce\/\" href=\"http:\/\/wo.ala.org\/tce\/\">Cultural Heritage and Living Culture: Defining the U.S. Library Position on Access and Protection of Traditional Cultural Expression<\/a>.  The conference aimed to discuss and debate the present and historical role of archives, libraries, and museums in preserving and providing access to the \u201ctraditional cultural expressions\u201d (TCE) of indigenous people and traditional communities worldwide. The conference further aimed to begin forming ALA positions on TCE, including how the rights of native people in their own TCE interact with conventional Western concepts and codifications of intellectual property. ALA will be able to carry forth these positions to discussions with global organizations such as UNESCO and the United Nation\u2019s <a title=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/portal\/index.html.en\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/portal\/index.html.en\">World Intellectual Property Organization (<\/a>WIPO). WIPO\u2019s <a title=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/tk\/en\/igc\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/tk\/en\/igc\/\">Intergovermental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklore<\/a> (IGC), addresses protections for TCE, which affect and are affected by international copyright treaties and U.S. copyright law.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#990000\">Tsosie at ITCA Conference<\/span><\/strong><br \/>In October, Professor Tsosie presented at the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona\u2019s conference \u201cFuture Directions of Tribal Health Research in Arizona\u201d on Intellectual Property and Cultural Property.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tsosie at ALA ConferenceRebecca Tsosie presented at the Cultural Heritage and Living Culture Conference in Washington DC.
