  A legal clinic at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law that will help those affected by domestic violence has been named the Ruth V. McGregor Family Protection Clinic in honor of the recently retired Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, Interim Dean Douglas Sylvester announced. The Clinic, housed in the College of Law’s Diane Halle Center for Family Justice, provides free legal assistance to low-income victims of family violence, many of whom cannot afford legal help and fear for their lives, including protective orders, custody and divorce. Buel, a clinical professor at the University of Texas School of Law and former prosecutor, has been chosen as the faculty director of the new Diane Halle Center for Family Justice at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, a partnership with the O’Connor House-Avon Foundation Program for Women and Justice. “Sarah Buel is perhaps the leading figure with regard to legal advocacy on behalf of family violence victims,” said Paul Schiff Berman, Dean of the College of Law. “Her arrival immediately catapults this center to national prominence.” The center was started with a $1 million grant from the Bruce T. MonaLou Callery hired as assistant director for Diane Halle Center

   MonaLou Callery, who has worked for 25 years fighting domestic violence, has been hired as assistant director of the new Diane Halle Center for Family Justice at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. The Center is expected to become a model for the nation by taking a fully integrated approach to issues of child abuse, spousal abuse, protective orders, custody, prosecutions, family law, juvenile law and health law matters.
